Victor Wembanyama holds his first France match: "I will never forget this day"

Victor Wembanyama was delighted with his first game for the French team against Lithuania on Friday (90-65), in a qualifying game for the 2023 World Cup. A precious success sold by a solid performance (20 points, 9 rebounds in 23 minutes).

France's defense was well-positioned throughout this game—despite some minor misses—and they were tough on offense as well, fueled by Damien Inglis's power under the basket. Sometimes static and without 3-point shots, France's offense relied on its efficiency inside, feeding off its defensive success. And while Sylvain Francisco did get a boost off the bench to help his team get ahead 8 points early on (22-14), he didn't have much impact after that.

Wembanyama said that he had many sleepless nights since he decided to join France but he knew that everything would work out well if he stayed calm during the process. He added that it was an honor for him to wear such an important jersey as France's national team."I will never forget this day", said Wembanyama after his debut with France."This is my dream come true!"

Before the game he got interviewed: You will be wearing the blue shirt for the first time in your senior career, it's a special moment...

I've already played for France at youth level (silver medal in European U16 and world U19). It gives me motivation in addition to that. It's very important for me. I also feel it among my teammates, opponents: fighting for your country is totally different, gives an energy superior.
